What types of nutrition nutritional therapy and dietary changes are there for people with cirrhosis who exercise?

  • Approximately, half of patients with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis have some degree of malnutrition, including loss of skeletal muscle (a condition known as sarcopenia). This happens due to the body using the reserve of protein in muscle to fulfill daily cellular functions.

  • Apart from exercising and increasing your daily activities, it is recommended for patients with cirrhosis to improve their nutrition with the appropriate quantity and quality of food.

  • While keeping in mind any particular sodium, fluid, or calorie restriction, it is important to add protein-rich snacks between meals, particularly at bedtime.

  • In the associated video you will find some pertinent information for patients and providers to review before starting an exercise program.

  • Should you have any doubt regarding what your diet should look like, please ask your dietician, or ask your provider to refer you to a dietician with expertise in liver diseases.
